A note on pearls
Pearls are a long standing wedding tradition. Don't settle for faux
pearls which are made of shell, glass or various synthetic products.
Cultured salt water and fresh water pearls are available in many colors,
shapes and price ranges.
Natural colored pearls occur in shades of whites, creams, pinks, and
grays. Dyed pearls are available in virtually any color. Shape, size,
color, surface quality and luster all dictate the price of pearls
which range from under twenty, to thousands of dollars per strand.
About 90% of pearls sold today are cultured. Cultured pearls are made
by shellfish in the same way they are created in the wild. The mollusks
secrete nacre in layers around an object. In the case of cultured
pearls the object is inserted by humans. Only an expert can distinguish
between the two by examining the pearl's core.
